Center for Community Development has made a commitment to partner with local schools in the South Shore community.  Real Men Read is one way we are fulfilling that commitment.  Each week male volunteers read to young children in grades kindergarten through third grade.  Reading aloud to children inspires them and spurs them on to be readers as well.

How is Center for Community Development Making a Difference?

Our mentoring program provides a caring adult friend to a young person.  Although mentors all
fill any number of different roles, all mentors have the same goal in common: to help young people achieve their potential and discover their strengths.

A mentor's main purpose is to help a young person define individual goals and find ways to achieve them.

By exposing a youth to new experiences, a mentor encourages positive choices, promotes high self-esteem, supports academic achievement and introduces the young person to ideas.

A mentor may help a young person:

  • Think through a problem at home or school
  • Make Non-violent choices
  • Set career goals and start taking steps to realize them
